Otters spotted in Aylesbury waterway

A video was uploaded to the Aylesbury Grapevine of otters frolicking in the sunshine.

It was an extremely unusual sighting, as usually they are nocturnal and come out only at night.

The video is not just of one otter, but a whole family.

Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust’s Mammal Project Officer Julia Lofthouse said:

“Otters are such charismatic creatures and we’re lucky to have them on most of our main waterways in Buckinghamshire.

"They are elusive and usually come out at night to hunt, so they can be difficult to spot. This sighting near Aylesbury, of what appears to be an otter family, is just fantastic.

“Last century otter numbers across the UK nose-dived, due to chemical poisoning, hunting and destruction of habitats.

"Now otter populations are recovering, which is a great species success story and could lead to more otter spotting in the future – so keep your eyes and ears open!”
